Steve Nash and Yao Ming Step Up
by Chris Harvey on 09/15/07
Steve Nash approached Yao Ming after a game last season and revealed his desire to do something to help with orphans in China.
What developed was a charity game that hoped to raise in the neighborhood of a million dollars to be distributed to the charities of choice: Chi Heng, a privately funded non-profit that works with children with AIDS; the Special Olympics; and the China Youth Development Foundation.
Steve Nash called upon Carmelo Anthony, Baron Davis, Leandro Barbosa, and others, while Yao Ming recruited the Chinese national team to help raise money for the cause. The total amount raised was $2.5 million between a dinner and the basketball game held in Beijing.
Team Yao defeated Team Nash 101-92 in a fun game seen by over 12,000 fans and over 200 million T.V viewers in China. Jackie Chan even performed the ceremonial toss to start the game.
Way to go guys! Hey, there are positive stories within professional athletics that you don’t always hear about.
