2008 Recap, Looking Forward to 09

by on 12/31/08

I was reviewing my post on things to do in 08 to reflect on this past year’s goals, priorities, and interests.

I did accomplish a few of the things on my list and fell short on others. 2008 was a challenging year for me personally.

To be honest, I told my wife that I felt like this was a down year. After my graduation, I posted here on the beginning of this year’s journey. And updated here on my life direction experience.

I also recently asked my wife if the experience from this year was my own fault. To a certain degree, I think so, to answer my own question. Let me explain.

It all depends on your outlook and worldview on life. There are certain things that happen that we can’t control. There are other things that we can control.

Where I felt that I failed in 2008 was my attitude and outlook on the year by saying it was a down year. That I can control. Pursuing a job that is met with closed doors all year long, I can’t control.

Doing what is on my plate now (work, serving opportunities in the community, family) well, is in my control, and should never be viewed as a “down” year.

2008 was filled with too much self pity and selfishness, and not enough selflessness. I’m so ready to move on to another subject and looking forward to 2009.

I am finishing up a formal “life plan” that I found helpful for balancing out that which is a priority in my life and the “how to” on accomplishing that.

Michael Hyatt has a great post on developing a “life plan” and produced a free example template here for you to download.

2008 didn’t turn out exactly how I had planned. There were plenty of things I couldn’t control and others I could. I will commit myself to learn my lessons and do much better this next year.

2009 Predictions: life changing decision for my family, new job, new attitude, and hopefully having our first baby.

What are you looking forward to in 2009?

Feliz Año Nuevo. Happy New Year!

    I haven’t really thought about my ’09 goals yet. Maybe we can talk about that next week. I can say without a doubt that I am excited to see what God has in store for you both this year.

    Son,
    Found poem sometime back. What to share it with you and others:

    Two little lines I heard one day,Traveling along life’s busy way;
    Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
    Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgement seat;
    Only one life,’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, the still small voice, Gently pleads for a better choice
    Bidding me selfish aims to leave, And to God’s holy will to cleave;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, a few brief years, Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
    Each with its clays I must fulfill, living for self or in His will;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    When this bright world would tempt me sore, When Satan would a victory score;
    When self would seek to have its way, Then help me Lord with joy to say;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Give me Father, a purpose deep, In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
    Faithful and true what e’er the strife, Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
    Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Oh let my love with fervor burn, And from the world now let me turn;
    Living for Thee, and Thee alone, Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
    Only one life, “twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

    Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say,”Thy will be done”;
    And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say “twas worth it all”;
    Only one life,’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.
