Vocational Calling
by Chris Harvey on 12/18/08
I had a great meeting yesterday with the Founder and President of G.O. Ministries.
I met with him for two reasons. First, I went to network for a sports outreach event that I am putting together for one of his partnering churches in west Louisville. Secondly, I went to learn all I can about non-profit start up and strategy.
I did learn a lot and asked a ton of questions. He kindly answered and met with me for two hours. And I left with plenty of questions still to answer.
The main topic that I left still pondering was vocational calling / life direction. I mentioned to him that I was strongly considering starting my own non-profit organization. And he offered me two things.
First, he offered the possibility of joining his team (raise your own support kind of situation). And secondly, he offered to support me on getting started on my own (advice, sounding board, legal and financial aid). We’ll see. More on that later.
Another thing that I came across yesterday was this helpful article by C.J. Mahaney on the same subject (vocational calling, roles).
Here is a taste of the article (worth the read):
“What about a stay-at-home mom with two kids? What about an auto mechanic? How about a real estate agent and a business owner? Has God called them?”
“But how can I be certain of my own calling? How can I know I am in the right job? Am I in the proper career path? What about where God wants me in the future? How do I determine God’s intended vocation(s) for my life?”
“It may be that our vocation is not clear because we have not started with these two questions.”
* Where has God placed me?
* Where am I positioned to serve others?
“I fear too many Christians are so distracted by thoughts of the future that they cannot discern with clarity how God has called them to serve in their present vocations. Though they show up for work each day, they don’t work with passion and joy each day.”
Helpful article. Read it.
It hit me upside the head.
I need to have more passion and joy in my present situation, my present vocation.
