Sports Organization / Non-Profit
by Chris Harvey on 01/16/09
I am on the edge of the diving board, ready to dive into the reality of starting a sports organization / non-profit.
I have dreamed, analyzed, brain-stormed, studied, planned, sought council, and contemplated key team members.
I have also doubted, feared, questioned, stressed, and wondered if this is really what I need to do next with my life.
Thoughts: Is there really a need for another sports organization?
Council I have received (via people, books, online sources):
1. Seek out and join an established organization or group that is already doing what you would like to do.
2. Start something new, innovative, fresh, that has value, that has a unique element different from what’s being done right now, or do what’s being done better.
I have sought out option 1 and have been met with closed doors and also a desire to do “it” better. So, that leaves me with the opportunity in option 2.
Decisions that I need to make (that are weighing heavy on my mind right now):
1. Location (where our home base will be).
We are still considering our options here in Kentucky and in Southern California.
2. Purpose (what label will the organization fall under).
Will this organization fall under a Christian or general based label? In other words, can an organization live out and incorporate a religious/spiritual worldview and their convictions without trumpeting that banner or being labeled?
Or is that being dishonest and misleading in our culture today? On the flip side, is that compromising?
Or will a general based label offer more opportunities and flexibility, despite some limitations? What are the limitations or concerns either way?
I would love to hear some feedback from you.
Next, I need to reveal what this sports organization looks like (visions, objectives, outlets, dreams, etc).
