Sports and Recreation Jobs
by Chris Harvey on 07/24/09
Are you passionate about the sports and recreation industry and looking for a new job?
Well I am, and have been searching and clawing my way through the athletic industry section of the web for some time now. And I am sure there are others who are looking for their next job as well.
The job market is tough right now – the understatement of the year – and I have been reminded on more than one occasion that the sports and recreation industry is too narrow of a field to be looking for a job. Maybe so, but there are jobs.
There are some solid websites that offer straight forward information about current jobs and others that make you jump through too many hoops or even pay for listings.
So, I wanted to offer a few search hubs that I have discovered that offer a solid listing of jobs in the industry.

HigherEd Jobs // This site offers numerous job listings in all categories for Higher Education settings, but for our purposes I will concentrated on sports and recreation searches.
On the Home Page click Search Jobs link and then click on Advance Search link (in blue and on the far right).
Job Categories: Admin-Athletics/Coaching, Faculty-Health-Physical Education and Kinesiology (scroll way down the list), Faculty-Health-Sports Mgmt, Recreation & Leisure Studies.
You can search by location and have other position type options.
Website Rating // 5 out of 5 stars. It’s user friendly and has detailed job category options listed. It’s a highly used site for employers.

NCAA: Career Center // Search multiple career categories on all divisions of NCAA athletic programs.
Website Rating // 5 out 5 stars. This site is one of the best I’ve participated in. It is very user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, has clear search category options, built in maps to view job locations, easy apply and resume uploading, and accounts are free.

NBA: Career Opportunities // Search for jobs with NBA League Offices or with NBA Teams.
League Office positions are categorized by departments, function type, and location. The headquarters are in NYC but there are other opportunities internationally (many openings in Asia).
Team positions are listed under NBA, WNBA, D-League categories and searchable by each team. Positions available include executive-level, sales, entry-level, and even internships.
Website Rating // 4 out of 5 stars. It’s user-friendly and categorizes jobs and teams well. Submitting applications and setting up an account is free and straight forward.

YMCA: Career // Search for salaried full-time jobs on the national vacancy list for the YMCA.
Job search by state, multiple categories, and by salary range. There are hourly full-time and part-time positions, as well as internships, but you must search at local YMCA locations. However, the site offers links to local YMCA’s by search via the zip code you enter.
Website Rating // 5 out of 5 stars. It’s user-friendly, offers detailed job descriptions, experience requirements, and compensation. Submitting applications and setting up an account is free and straight forward.
I hope to continue to post sports and recreation jobs in the future and maybe have a section on the blog with specific job postings.
Let me know if your are looking for a job in this industry and if I can help direct you to some jobs opportunities in your location.
