New Creation from FC Post on Vimeo.
I came across this video and I had to share it with you all.
The guy singing is Dex Alexander. I know Dex from my time living in Southern California, connections at CBU (where we went to college), and from loving his former band called “All Together Separate.”
I haven’t heard about what Dex is up to for some time, so it ’s great to see him back in action and using his creative gifts in music and producing (Closer to the Start).
This song/production got me so pumped up! It inspired me to be creative, and to not be ashamed of my faith, and the work that God has done in me, and the hope we have in Him.

Great Way to Explore Your City, Run

Want to explore uncharted territory in you community or find out what people are up to?
Go on a run. If running isn’t your thing, ride your bike. Don’t have a bike? Get out your walking shoes.
This morning, my wife and I went on a long run (9 miles) to keep up in our training for a half-marathon race next weekend.
There is no way I’m running 9 miles around an oval track or pounding it out on a treadmill, so we needed to mark out a new course to run this distance. What was great about the run is that we got to see parts of the city that we haven’t seen before and also see where people were hanging out on beautiful Saturday morning.
We started our run at Southern Seminary and headed downtown through a newly developed bike/run path at the corner of Lexington (for those of you who are familiar with Louisville). On our way downtown, we passed a skate/bike park that I have always wanted to check out (it was packed), cool little small businesses, and plenty of people enjoying breakfast or some coffee at local shops.
As we reached downtown (4 and half miles at this point), we noticed another 5K race finishing up, proceeded around Louisville Slugger Baseball Field, and headed back home via Frankfort Ave (passed a coworker of my wife who is training for the same race).
Overall, we enjoyed the new path and having the opportunity to explore our city and seeing what it was up to.
But 9 miles is still 9 miles! We are tired. And to be honest with you, I enjoy the results and the feeling of accomplishment after a run more than I do the struggle.
But the reality is that we can’t have one with out the other, whether if that is in training for a race or in life.
How do you like to explore your city?

Here are some new Native American inspired sneaker (WMNS Nike Terminator) pics that I came across via Kix and the City.
The issue is, once again, that the shoes are released in the Far East, and no information on a domestic release has been noted at this point.
It is interesting to see this type of American culture, in the form of Native American inspired sneakers, exported internationally. There seems to be a demand overseas because the shoe industry is continuing to produce new models, but any distribution in the U.S is limited, at best, and for the most part not available.
As I have mentioned before, many have commented on these type of sneakers (I am still getting feedback).
There are those that despise Nike and thus leave plenty of “love mail” (It seems that some people search the web just to find the topic they are against and so they can voice there opinion). And yet there are many who love the designs and ask me where they can find themselves a pair.
Again, with the sneaker featured above, I don’t know where you can get a pair. Search the web, particularly on sites that have connections to the market in Asia. Try this website.
And don’t be intimidated by foreign languages because many sites have plugins that give the option to read the content in multiple languages of your choice.

Here is a shot of my new header for all of you that have a feed reader. It is a step up from the previous default header, but still needs some work.
Additionally, I added a few more bloggers to the list. New on the list is Jon Allen (good friend from Southern California, High School teammate, and an official MD now), Aaron Proffitt (former roommate and teammate in College, and now a pastor at Aletheia Church), and lastly, but not least, there is Anne Jackson.
If you have a blog and want some link love, then let me know.

Ex-Drug Dealers, Hip Hop, and New Dawn

On October 19, these two ex-drug dealers, aka Blue Chip (Gerard Hennig) and Specialist (Rudy Ramos), will be coming to our church to rap and preach the Word during our main service (11 am -12:30 pm).
This Hip-Hop duo has toured the U.S. and overseas in Europe and have shared the stage with Corey Red, Master P and Lil’ Romeo, Pettidee , Missy Elliot and Timberland, Trina, Detrick Haddon, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz, Michelle of Destiny’s Child, Prime Minister, B.B. Jay, Lexi, Woody Rock of Drew Hill, Gospel Gangstaz, Trick Daddy, Dr. Bobby Jones, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary as well as many others. Check out their website and bio here.
The kicker is that they usually receive a thousand to two thousand a show, but have offered to come for free and give back to a small community in which they have a connection with (La Grange, KY), and to support a small Hispanic church (New Dawn).
I already know that a few youth/adults/families in our community that have been “hit and miss” will be there to hear what these dudes got to say. It should be an interesting show and definitely an event to change up the style from our tradition services.
Our church as been averaging about 80+ people and has a seating max at about 250 people. We shall see what kind of turn out we have and how people respond through this medium.

Conference Trip to Nashville

Heading down to Nashville, TN this weekend for an Hispanic church leadership conference put on by LifeWay (nothing online about this conference, but they tell me it’s a go).
The sessions that our church, New Dawn, will be concentrating on will be with Sunday School and Youth Ministry.
The Hispanic division of the Kentucky Baptist Convention is sponsoring many leaders from it’s local churches to go to this conference,
thank you.
This will be a first for me, but I am told that sessions will be in Spanish and English. However, it will be a good opportunity because my Spanish needs to improve drastically.
Hopefully this will be a productive conference for our church as well, where some of our leadership can gain some tools to better serve our community.
We shall see.
Any suggestions on a good place to eat?
A guy from work suggested, if we had the time, to go to Robert’s Western World down on the strip (”The best music anywhere,” he said, “because you know music is my thing”).
This is coming from a guy that has cowboy boots on, a huge belt buckle, a sweet mustache, and plays in a cover band that rocks country and classic rock.

Lessons in the Power Outage

We have our power back on (despite the fact that thousands still are without here in Louisville)!
I remember commenting to my wife during the few days without electricity that we have it good (compared to many around the world) and that we take so much for granted.
Despite the power outage, we still had undamaged shelter, running water, and gas stoves.
We lost a small portion of refrigerated items, but Southern Seminary stepped up and fed everyone on campus (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for a few days.
I quickly realized what I take for granted on a daily basis when I would still try to hit the light switch when I entered a room, even though I already knew that there was no power. Or jumping into a shower that only has cold water (my wife has skills, heating up a pot of water and using a cup to pour warm water in the shower).
How about being thankful for the design of a refrigerator? All of Louisville was out of ice at one point when I was searching, trying to salvage the food I just bought at the store.
Even though we were interrupted from our daily routine (food in the frig, not sitting in the dark, having to go to the car to charge our phones, not watching TV, or having the Internet), positive things happened.
My wife and I actually talked to each more. I got to talk to and met many of our neighbors on campus for the first time (everybody was outside). I read more. My wife and I went to bed earlier.
Overall, we were glad when the power was brought back on. However, getting out of the daily routine, or at least going through an event that makes you not take things for granted, was a good thing.

Now on Facebook

I finally gave in last night to a few requests that I have received for a while now to join Facebook.
Here is the deal. I didn’t feel like I needed multiple sites to maintain and connect with people when I already have this blog to operate. Right?
Also, I wasn’t convinced of the quality and capability of Facebook’s claim to connect people. You can’t even get a glimpse of this until you sign up for an account. Lame!
But after a few encouraging requests from friends and family, I decided to give it a try, and if I didn’t like it then I could always delete the free account.
Well, so far so good. And I must say that I am impressed with the capability to connect with people, people that I haven’t connected with in a long time.
So if you would like you can connect with me now on Facebook .
And if you are new here on Baller 21 and have arrived via Facebook, then welcome!

Baller 21 in a Wordle

Have you heard about Wordle? Here is how the website describes the product:
“Wordle is a toy for generating ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.”
This “toy” is also free. As you can see above, I created a Wordle based on text from my “About” page and also titles under the category section of my blog.
I have also seen people create a Wordle based on text from a book/article/sermon they have produced. This could be helpful feedback to see what words were used most frequent and also to creatively see what words describe your product (there is a feature to exclude common words).
